What This Race Counts Toward:
Hatfield-McCoy Marathon Description
The Hatfield-McCoy Marathon follows the trail of America’s most famous family feud, starting in Goody, Kentucky, and crossing the Tug Fork River into Matewan, West Virginia, before finishing in Williamson. The hilly, point-to-point course climbs Blackberry Mountain around mile 6.5 and passes historic feud sites including Randolph McCoy’s birthplace, the Hog Trial Cabin, and Rosanna’s baby gravesite. Runners can choose the marathon or one of two half marathon options, the Blackberry Mountain or River Road course. With no time limit and a small, welcoming field, it’s a truly one-of-a-kind Appalachian running experience.

Hatfield-McCoy Marathon Additional Details:
This race earns its motto, “No Feuding, Just Runnin’,” the moment you cross the finish line and receive a medal alongside a mason jar stamped with the marathon logo, a nod to the region’s moonshine history. Aid stations lean into that local flavor too, with volunteers who dress up in themes ranging from the famous feud to Hawaiian luau getups, and keep ice and cold sponges flowing for the Appalachian humidity. Around mile 10, watch for the World’s Smallest Horses, whose owners set up trackside so runners can stop for a photo. Many out-of-towners bunk overnight in the local firehouse before race day, a detail that captures just how small and welcoming this Kentucky-West Virginia crossing truly is.
