Long Haul 100 Description

Long Haul 100 challenges ultrarunners across six 16.8-mile loops through Colt Creek State Park’s longleaf pine flatwoods and cypress domes near Lakeland, Florida. As the Sunshine State’s only Western States Endurance Run qualifier, this fast, flat course rewards steady pacing and grit over technical difficulty. Runners get 32 hours to cover the full 100 miles (finish inside 30 to punch your WSER lottery ticket), backed by three fully stocked aid stations and drop-bag access every loop. Want a shorter taste? The companion 100 Furlongs (12.5 miles) samples the same wild terrain. Every finisher earns a hard-won belt buckle.

Long Haul 100 Additional Details:

Running Long Haul 100 means settling into a rhythm few ultras allow: six loops, the same aid stations, the same sandy trail winding past cypress domes and open prairie, yet somehow never boring. Florida’s pancake-flat terrain strips away the usual excuse of hills and replaces it with heat, humidity, and the quiet mental grind of passing the same landmarks six times. Alligators glide through nearby ponds, gopher tortoises shuffle off the path, and fox squirrels dart through the pines as headlamps click on for the long overnight stretch. The loop format breeds an unusual camaraderie: you pass friends and rivals lap after lap, trade encouragement, and watch the field thin as cutoffs tighten. Crossing the finish after 100 miles of flatwoods feels less like conquering terrain and more like a test of patience, fueling, and sheer perseverance.
