Hardrock 100 Description

The Hardrock 100 is widely regarded as the toughest, most coveted lottery entry in American ultrarunning: 100 miles through Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, linking Silverton, Telluride, Ouray, and Lake City with 33,441 feet of climbing and descending at an average elevation of 11,186 feet. Runners top out atop 14,048-foot Handies Peak and finish by kissing the Hardrock — a painted rock at the Silverton course finish. Alternating clockwise and counter-clockwise each year, this legendary Western States and UTMB Index qualifier demands real high-altitude mountaineering skill, not just endurance, from the small, lottery-selected field lucky enough to start.

Hardrock 100 Additional Details:

Entry is decided by lottery each December, and hopefuls first need a qualifying finish plus at least 8 volunteer hours just to get their name in the hat. The race carries a 48-hour overall time limit, with hard cutoffs at aid stations spaced across remote alpine terrain where afternoon thunderstorms, hail, and even snow are common even in July. Runners cross several exposed passes above 12,000 feet, so route-finding, altitude acclimatization, and cold-weather gear matter as much as fitness. Race proceeds help fund the Joel Zucker Memorial Scholarship, which has awarded more than $435,000 to graduating students from Silverton and the surrounding San Juan Mountain communities since 1998. Expect a small, close-knit field, an all-volunteer operation, and a finish line where every runner kisses the same rock that gives the race its name.
