HURT 100 Description

The HURT100 sends runners on five brutal 20-mile loops through the rain-soaked Mānoa, Makiki, and Nuʻuanu Valleys above Honolulu, climbing and descending roughly 24,500 feet of slick mud, roots, and rock. Starting and finishing at the Hawaiʻi Nature Center, the course rarely offers flat ground or long sightlines, trading scenery for relentless, technical terrain in a lush tropical rainforest. Entry is by lottery only, and with a historical finish rate hovering around 50%, HURT100 has earned its reputation as one of the most physically demanding Western States and UTMB Index qualifiers in the country.

Always check the official race website for the most accurate and up-to-date race information and logistics.

HURT 100 Additional Details:

Entry is decided entirely by lottery each August, with the Book of HURT — the race’s detailed runner handbook — published each year covering entry rules, course notes, and cutoffs. The course runs in five ~20-mile loops back to the Makiki start/finish, with a cutoff for each completed loop and a hard 36-hour overall limit. Because the trail network runs through a working rainforest, sections occasionally get rerouted around storm damage or landslides, so runners should check the latest course notes before race week. Expect near-constant humidity, frequent rain, and deep mud regardless of reroutes — trail shoes with real traction and a strong stomach for repeated laps matter more here than raw speed. There’s no pacer support built into the format; this is a run-your-own-race event through and through.
