Bighorn Trail Run Description
The Bighorn Trail Run sends 100-mile runners on a remote out-and-back through the Bighorn National Forest near Dayton, Wyoming each June, climbing over 20,000 feet through the Little Bighorn and Tongue River drainages. Born out of a local effort to protect the Bighorn Mountains from development, the race has earned a reputation as one of the toughest ultras in the country, with steep climbs, technical descents, and true backcountry remoteness. It’s a Western States 100 qualifier that rewards runners who come ready for a genuine mountain test.

Bighorn Trail Run Additional Details:
The course mixes technical single-track, rugged jeep doubletrack, and gravel road across its full 100 miles, with stretches of up to 18 miles between access points where the trail is the only way in or out. Runners share the course with elk, deer, moose, and the occasional black bear, and should plan for extreme, fast-changing mountain weather at elevation. Aid stations are run entirely by volunteers who camp on the course for days before the race, stocking major checkpoints with hot food alongside standard ultra fare. With a 35-hour cutoff, the Bighorn 100 is a full test of pacing, preparation, and grit from the Little Bighorn drainage to the finish in Dayton.
