Kettle Moraine 100 Description

Deep in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine State Forest, the Kettle Moraine 100 has tested trail runners since 1996, making it one of the oldest 100-mile races in the country. Starting and finishing at the Nordic Trailhead near Whitewater, runners tackle two out-and-back journeys along 65 miles of the historic Ice Age National Scenic Trail, climbing roughly 8,800 feet of rolling glacial terrain through pine forest, prairie, and marsh. As an official Western States 100 qualifier and proud member of the Midwest Grand Slam of Ultra-running, Kettle Moraine 100 delivers a true test of endurance, grit, and Midwest ultrarunning tradition.

Kettle Moraine 100 Additional Details:

Running the Kettle Moraine 100 feels like an initiation into ultrarunning’s roots. From the moment you leave Nordic Trailhead before dawn, the course pulls you into 80% wooded singletrack, where soft pine-needle beds give way to rocky, root-laced climbs and short, punishing rollers that never let your legs settle. The Ice Age Trail carries you through 65 miles of glacial kettles and moraines, past marshes, prairie openings, and dense hardwood stands, with a second sunrise waiting for those still moving after 24 hours. Community anchors every mile: aid stations stocked with hot breakfasts, volunteers who’ve been part of the race for decades, and a finish line crowd that remembers your name from years past. With cutoffs looming and humidity testing seasoned runners, Kettle Moraine rewards patience, resilience, and respect for a course that has shaped generations of Western States qualifiers.
