- Race Date: 02/08/2025
- Race Distances: 100 Kilometer, 50 Kilometer, Ultra Marathon
The Black Canyon Ultras are a popular series of trail races held each February in the rugged desert landscape of Arizona’s Black Canyon Trail. Offering a 100K and a 50K distance, these races are renowned for their stunning scenery, challenging terrain, and fast course, making them a top qualifier for the prestigious Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run.
The point-to-point courses follow the historic Black Canyon Trail, which winds through the Sonoran Desert and features breathtaking views of saguaro-studded hills, wide-open desert expanses, and the Agua Fria River. While the course is predominantly downhill, with a net descent of over 3,000 feet in the 100K, it presents plenty of technical sections, rocky climbs, and sharp descents to challenge even experienced ultrarunners. The desert terrain and unpredictable weather, including warm midday temperatures and chilly mornings, add more difficulty.
The Black Canyon Ultras are known for their excellent organization. They have well-stocked aid stations approximately every six to eight miles and enthusiastic volunteers who provide crucial support to runners. The competitive and welcoming race atmosphere draws elite athletes and dedicated ultrarunners looking for a memorable desert challenge.
Black Canyon 100K is a 2025 Western States 100 qualifier and a Golden Ticket Race for the 2025 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run Golden.
With its mix of desert beauty and technical demands, the Black Canyon Ultras offer an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Arizona.
